Route & Navigation

The Route

The Round Rotherham follows the Rotherham borough perimeter in a continuous 50-mile loop. Despite the borough’s industrial reputation, the route is one of the most varied in northern England: canal towpaths, river banks, wetlands, working farms, ancient woodland, the ruins of Roche Abbey, and the elevated section above Maltby that breaks many competitors late in the race.

Key facts

  • Distance: 80 km / 50 miles
  • Elevation gain: ~800 m (OS contour method); 1,023 m by GPS track
  • Terrain: Firm tracks, road, canal towpath, field crossings, woodland paths
  • Highest point: ~145 m above sea level
  • Start / Finish: Manvers Waterfront Boat Club, S63 7DG
  • Route type: Looped / circular — returns to start

Waymarking & navigation

The route is waymarked with approximately 160 direction markers. Strip maps and written route descriptions are issued with your race number. GPS tracks and route files are available to download and are compatible with all major GPS devices and smartphone apps.

Navigation note: The route includes at least one level crossing and several road crossings. Follow waymarks carefully in the early morning darkness near the start.

The eight checkpoints

Eight manned checkpoints divide the route into relay legs and provide mandatory cutoffs for solo runners. Checkpoint staff provide food, hot drinks, and first aid.
